The current production by

Wellington Repertory Theatre is:

The importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde’s comic masterpiece

Directed by Julia Harris

"In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing."

Jack, from the country, plays around in the city pretending to be Earnest. His city pal Algernon plays Earnest in the country. The unwitting Cecily and Gwendolen both love Earnest, but which Ernest do they love and did the real Ernest die in Paris? Meanwhile why was Jack dumped in a handbag at Victoria Station and why should this offend the formidable Lady Bracknell?

The Importance of Being Earnest is a sparkling romantic comedy and a brilliant satire on the upper classes, brimming with waspish wit and wonderful one-liners.
Director Julia Harris has modernised this production and set the play in the trendy “Wills and Harry” of today complete with Blackberry phones and other 21st century devices. Cucumber sandwiches are still on the menu of course!

Oscar Wilde’s most famous play is the perfect festive season night out and if you enjoy shows like Sex and the City, you will love this timeless classic.
