God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza is a clever black comedy that satirises the bourgeois upper-middle classes.

The action follows two couples – the Novaks and the Raleighs – as they come together to discuss a physical altercation that occurred between their two sons. Politeness and civility fill the air in the beginning, but by the end it’s carnage – fronts fall away and violent truths come into full view.

The first English translation was performed on London’s West End in 2008, receiving the Olivier Award for Best New Play. After some minor changes to accommodate an American audience, it went to Broadway in 2009 where it again won Best Play at the Tony Awards, as well as Best Director (Mathew Warchus), and Best Leading Actress (Marcia Gay Harden).

It’s this latter version that we’re bringing to life at the Gryphon theatre this year.

Important Notes

It is the directors preference to do the majority of rehearsals with the cast “off book”. Cast will be required to have lines learned from an early stage.

The play includes vomiting on stage, some low-level violence, and offensive language.

Casting of each role will be affected by casting of the other roles. Eg. We’re showing two married couples on stage, so it will be looking for the magic combination of actors.

Character Descriptions

Veronica Novak Female. Forties. Social crusader. Married to Michael. Veronica is writing a book about Darfur. She has two children with Michael, a son Bruno and a daughter Camille. Bruno has lost two of his teeth through an altercation with Annette and Alan’s son, Ferdinand. As the meeting goes on, Veronica becomes extremely upset and agitated, which amongst other things involves her attacking her husband.
Annette Raleigh Female. Forties. Married to Alan. They have a son, Ferdinand, who hit another boy with a stick, causing him to lose some teeth. Annette is in wealth management. She is unimpressed by the story of Michael leaving his daughter’s hamster outside to run away. Her extreme dislike of her husband’s behaviour – constantly talking on his cell phone – leads to her vomiting all over Veronica’s art books, and her husband. She ends up getting very drunk.
Alan Raleigh Male. Forties. Married to Annette. Father of Ferdinand. He is a lawyer and spends much of the meeting interrupting proceedings by taking calls on his cell phone. The calls are about a drug that is now having bad side effects, which he advises his colleagues to not admit to. He does not care for Veronica, until he sees her physically attack her husband. At which point he states that he is beginning to like her.
Michael Novak Male. Forties. Married to Veronica. Father of two children with Veronica. He works in housewares. He spends a lot of time in the beginning of the meeting trying to please everyone / agreeing with everyone (much to his wife’s annoyance). Michael soon admits to trying to get rid of his daughters hamster, and to his wife trying to pass him off as a liberal.
