President's Note

Kia Ora all...

It's a short and sweet newsletter this time around. The Spitfire Grill opened yesterday to a full house and some great reviews, and we're well into getting prepared for our next show Rope, directed by Paul Stone and Helen Cashin.

The theme for the start of 2022, as it has been since early 2020, is 'Covid'. We all know, and have experienced, the downsides of the pandemic. But if I can briefly indulge in a 'glass half full' approach, The Spitfire Grill well demonstrates our planning approach to mitigate risks and maintain flexibility for any of our show seasons. A small-cast musical allowed us to limit interactions during rehearsals. The production team was kept to a minimum. We produced the play via small 'cohorts' to ensure that the risk of a spreading infection could be kept as low as it could. I cannot thank the cast, band and crew enough for playing their role in this unusual approach to preparing a complex and difficult musical!

We might all be over the impacts of the last two years. At a personal level, I am sure we have all found it difficult at times. But there is no doubt WRT has learnt - and we will be the stronger for it in the long run.

Nga mihi

The Spitfire Grill - ONSTAGE!!

"This slick production of a gem of a musical is well worth a watch."

Well, that's what the review at Regional News says anyway. This musical is simply beautiful. Authentic, intimate, emotional and funny all rolled into a professional package. As the story unfolds in front the audience on stage, there are plenty of moments that tug at your heartstrings and offer the chance to reflect.

The music is complex - and in this show, there is simply nowhere for the cast to hide. They are there, raw, right in front of the audience and baring the soul of their characters. The actors on stage are incredibly well-supported by the talented band that we've assembled behind the scenes; we thank them for their dedication to the cause.
More from Regional News: "As the three leading women, Douglas, Gay, and Boyes are strong, engaging, and polished. Their harmonies are spot on and one of the highlights of this intimate but weighty production. Ultimately, this is a story of women taking responsibility for their own empowerment and these three deliver that mission convincingly".

We agree. We know you're all worried about going out, given the Covid environment, but this show deserves an audience - it's a great way to overcome your FOGO (fear-of-going-out). It is simply magical. Tickets available from tonight's performance until April 2nd - book on our websoite.

Rope - the cast!

This is HOT off the press! Thanks know what (the big C)...the audition process took a little longer than we expected. But we are VERY pleased to announce the following as the cast for Rope, which opens on June 1st and is already kicking off rehearsals this coming Sunday!

Brandon: Slaine McKenzie
Granillo: Tom Foy
Rupert: Nick Edwards
Raglan: Kent Norris
Leila: Mandy Watkins
Sabot: Stephanie Gartrell
Mrs Debenham: Susannah Donovan

In particular, we welcome Tom and Kent to the WRT family. We still have one further character to finalise, Sir Johnstone Kentley, due to some unforeseen circumstances - that will be the subject of a future newsletter!

Our thanks to all those who took the time to audition. We always appreciate your support and interest in our shows.

Apartment - website booking banner-01
The image might be temporary, but the auditions are definitely not! We're pleased to announce that auditions for Apartment will occur on May 7th-8th.

We'll get some details up on our website over the next day or two; but if you're interested, save the date now!

Coming up in 2022

Rope - directed by Paul Stone and Helen Cashin

When: Jun 1st - 11th

Brandon wants excitement at any price. He persuades his weak-minded friend Granillo to assist him in the murder of a fellow undergraduate, Ronald Raglan. They place the body in a wooden chest and invite some acquaintances, including the dead man's father, to a party - the chest and its gruesome contents serving as a supper table.

The Apartment - written & directed by Tama Smith

When: Aug 3rd - 13th

WRT is proud to be supporting the development of this brand-new New Zealand play. It tells the story of residents of an apartment block in Wellington, set against the trials and tribulations of the Covid-19 restrictions. A must-see show for '22!
Avenue Q - directed by Ewen Coleman
Music & Lyrics by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx
Book by Jeff Whitty

When: Nov 23rd - Dec 3rd

A well-known favourite makes a return to the Wellington stage. Not the show for your own 'little monsters', even if most of the characters are based on Sesame Street! Fun and entertaining, while still highlighting some serious themes, the show drips with sarcasm and parody.

Supporting Roles

Price Changes
After many years, WRT has reluctantly increased its standard ticket prices, to take effect from our second production (Rope). Covid-19 is a factor in this, but so are the gradual increases in underlying costs of staging our shows. The increase is only $2.50 - but remember that our 2022 Season Pass is a great way to beat the increase!
Gift Vouchers:
Did you know that you can buy Gift Vouchers for Wellington Rep?

Denominations are in $100 (for the Season Pass), $35, $30 or $25, with the ability to insert your own message into the voucher.

A great birthday idea!
